ABS problems
Hi guys, happy Easter. Got a problem with the ABS on my diesel 1.8, 75. I had a recondition computer installed and Murphy's law kicked in. I start the car all the lights go out including the ABS indicator but I can feel the ABS kicking in. After traveling about a mile the ABS light comes on and the brakes are working in regular mode. This is sometimes accompanied by the hand brake light comming on even though this is not engaged. I been given a couple of possible reasons for this but i would like to punt this problem around so i dont go down the wrong road and have to start all over again. I've got the battery box removed for a start. Cheers

Hi Allan, which computer was replaced? The main engine ecu or the abs ecu?

Hi Allan.
Which engine does your car have a 1.8 petrol or a 2.0 diesel engine as in your profile ? either way where did you get the recon ECU from and who fitted it, why was it changed out in the first place.

1.8 Diesel, problem was tachometer and temp gauge not working

There are quite a few ECUs on the car - sounds like you had the ECM replaced, so probably a coincidence that you now have an ABS fault.
From what you describe one of the sensors isn't picking up all the magnetic reluctor segments. Commonly happens on one of the rear wheels when the backplate rusts and damages the reluctor. |

A member suggested the fault might be in the pins of the connector under the battery box. But I cant ID this bit of kit, even though I've got the battery box off. My car is a 1.8 02 desiel so I hope this is the right place to locate this connector. The other suggestions come from this ongoing thread. I'll only go so far with this cos I'm in my mid 70's with some health issues. So if the actions required are very complex, I'll just have to let old girl go. Cheers

But just 20 mins up the road in Newton Abbot you've Exeter Road Garage, they have a Rover diagnostic computer that can pin-point the source of the problem, or at least set you on the right course, maybe even fix the problem while you have a look around Trago's.
