It depends where the septic tank discharges to if its to a soakaway field then the General Binding Regulstion 2020 as they are properly called, dont apply.

They only apply to tanks which go direct to a dry ditch or watercourse.

However if you replace the septic tank with a packaged treatement plant this can discharge directly to a watercourse , but not a dry ditch.

A septic tank is a multi chamber structure were waste water enters the first chamber settles and then flows to the second and third chambers before discharging. The settled solids in each chamber encourage the growth of microorganisms which "eat' the poo and clean up the water before it discharges. Never flush chemicals into one or fully empty it as the bugs are needed for it to operate.

A packaged treatement plant comes in many formats , but basically is a powered unit that uses aeration to clean the waste water before it discharges.

A cesspit is a holding tank for the waste water, has no outlet and needs regular emptying .

can you re check what you wrote as I am confused?
"A septic tank is a multi chamber structure were waste water enters the first chamber settles and then flows to the second .......")
but then you say
"A septic tank is a holding tank for the waste water, has no outlet and needs regular emptying "

no worries I thought it was me. Can you tell me what a cesspool is? I have looked on the internet and seen completely different descriptions
I am assuming your handle was based on work?
Forgive me, not trying to be thick or confrontational but what is a soakaway field?

Essentialy it is pond which your waste water drains in to not an enclosed tank like a cesspit. As you can imagine they are not very common now ! but the name dates back to medieval times when thats were waste water was disposed off.

Cesspit and cesspool are often use to mean the same. I suppose historically a pit could be man made and a pool a natural feature and over time the pit became covered.

A soakaway field has a series of perforated pipes normally in a herring bone pattern close to the ground which allows the water from a septic tank or treatement plant to soak back into the ground. Sometimes called an infitration trench or field.

Yes 36 yrs as a civil engineer designing sewerage systems.

Should read rules, really must stop typing long messages on my phone

Heres a link https://www.gov.uk/permits-you-need-...-binding-rules

As you can see they refer to cesspools not cesspits , as I said before they have become interchangeable .

Absolutely. They're suing the solicitor that carried out the conveyancing.

Hence the username.

Surprised no one picked up on that or mentioned it during the replies.
