Does using Cruise control improve fuel consumption, just a thought.

Haven't a clue. If you're travelling at a constant speed I'd imagine cruise would make any necessary adjustments more smoothly than a size 10 boot, but I suspect any difference in fuel consumption would be so small it wouldn't be noticeable.

on a long distance run, I guess it would make a little bit of difference. it takes away the natural speeding up and slowing down we don't realise we're doing on the motorway. maintaining a constant speed I would have thought would improve mpg, but the gain is probably tiny.

On the flat, cruise is probably more efficient (not sure if the fuelling map changes for cruise on the 75 like it does on some cars). On hills it'll probably be less efficient as it'll floor the throttle if needed to maintain the set speed when going uphill, whereas a human would probably be happy to let the speed drop a little knowing they could coast down the other side.

I remember driving one of the new company Toyota Avensis with their new 1.8 VVTi engine (back in the early 2000s) to Bradford and although this didn't have cruise control, and there's some decent hills on the M1 north of Mansfield, I achieved just under 50mpg driving specifically for economy - good going for a petrol car of that size!

If you plan ahead reading the road you can get a little more than cruise can provide. The cruise works to the instant you can evaluate ahead. As mentioned earlier you can see the hill the cruise cannot.

I believe that using the cruise on a long trip can mean that it is not as economical as doing the nescesary work yourself. I think someone carried out an experiment on a long trip, and found that comparing it with the same journey on self control, cruise was less economical. Can not remember how much, but I don't think it was a great amount.

As an avid cruise advocate, I can tell you it most definitely does, You will get a lot more MPG when using cruise, my v6 got about 19mpg without and over 25 with. I used cruise all the time, except when in town.

Maybe not with an Auto. The cruise maintains speed up inclines etc. with throttle and gear change (seems much more willing to down shift) where as driving conservatively tends to give better results.

I never find a road quiet enough to use cruise control ! Seems like I have no sooner set it than I need to slow down or overtake .......people keep getting in the way

I've only ever found it to be of real use on the M180 or on the M6 north bound once you get past Preston at 3am on a Saturday night.
The longest run on CC I ever did was about 200 miles on an autoroute in France.
