Having owned in order R75 2.5 Auto, ZTCDTi manual, ZT V8, and then another two R75 CDTi Manual my vote is for the V6 by a country mile. Loved them all but engine in isolation it's the V6.

Having owned and driven all variants, my favourite has to be the 1.8 turbo. In my opinion, it is just as smooth as the V6 and it goes quite well. Also, it does sound nice and it has the turbo 'flutter' which you just can't beat the sound of. Mine just needs the 200bhp remap.
The V6 is nice too and sounds nice but is very under powered for what it is and isn't great on fuel. I don't mind a car that's a bit thirsty on fuel as long as it has lots of power to justify it.

Depends what you mean by "awful" on fuel. I have recently checked the consumption on my ZT 180 V6 auto quite carefully and over two tankfuls (with admittedly quite a lot of motorway cruising) with no driving concessions to economy, I am averaging 32mpg which I don't think is at all bad for a 2.5 litre engine with a design history going back more than 20 years. Incidentally, the onboard computer would have me believe that I averaged 36 mpg over the same period, which I did think was unlikely. To put a little more context on the issue, I used to run a Rover 25 1.6 Stepspeed that returned a constant 38 mpg however I drove it.
