Do you like the car and want to keep it or do you want a change?
If it has a long MOT and no other issues i'd be fixing it, the respray could be done later.
For £600 plus scrap value what would you buy?

The £600 is just an estimate on my part so far. I'm waiting on my mechanic getting back to me so that I have a better idea.

And yes I do really like the car and if this hadn't have happened I'd still be driving it each day without a thought of changing it. I've had other more 'sensible' cars in the past that have frankly bored me to death on my two hour round trip daily commute. I find I can be so forgiving of a car's faults if I actually like the thing!

Spent 700 on mine since I bought it, new fuel pump , brake pads and discs, cam sensor and of course the marina Brian map, full service done by me, good thing is the cars about sorted mechanical wise, next will be cosmetic but I don't mind I love the the car for what it is and does, and just to put a perspective on it £2500 on the discovery 3 just to repair the suspension, I reckon a shop about you could get the paintwork done a lot cheaper

I should be possible to get the clutch including CSC replaced for about £450.

That's pretty much what I spent on mine too.

Heard back from my mechanic. He reckons labour will be about £320 with no complications. Haven't hunted around for parts prices, but noticed DMGRS do a Borg and Beck clutch with LUK slave for £180 which doesn't seem too bad... but will compare prices with elsewhere. So still a big bill, but slightly better than I thought. He's not the cheapest, but this is south-east England and most importantly I do trust him not to rip me off and to do a good job.

Going to sleep on it and make a decision in the morning.

It' about £200 "up north" for labour, and I would be looking to fit an LUK repset pro three part clutch kit if it were my car

Something like THIS

I was in the same position last year, red CDTI 146k with faulty slave. Given a prospect of £600 to fix. Went for what looked like an lovely (it was ) 2005 S-Type Jag 2.7 manual for £3000. I spent a further £1900 after some 9000 miles with intermittent faults eventually selling it for £720 to a dealer. I went back to my rover spent the £600 and have since had a reliable 13000 miles driving a car I know. The car has cosmetic issues and a few live with issues but I know the car.

The kit in my cupboard for future use on thye CDT is exactly that - an Luk Repset Pro. I see no reason to move away from Luk.

I would also have said £200 to £250 for labour on the basis of it being a 5-6 hour job.

...which I think sums up all of my fears. You've convinced me. I've ordered a Luk repset pro from Advanced Factors for £148 delivered.

Hope I don't come to regret this!

Thanks again folks... if it wasn't for the good people of this forum I'd have given up on her long ago.
