Adjusting hand brake

How does the hand brake adjust on our cars? I had new hand brake cable and backing plates, shoes and springs etc done all last year. Sometimes, the rear brakes squeal since and also it doesn’t quite feel right when pulling the hand brake up and down. I think it may just need adjusting but unsure how to do it. Thanks.

I've never had to add or replace a compensator.

I have taken the hubs off, stripped and cleaned all of the handbrake system, shoes, adjuster and springs. Mark the cogs with white marking and grease the adjuster assembly, setting it towards the closing position because once the hub is replaced one has to open the shoes. Apply copper ease to all moving surfaces. I did try to create a light to illuminate the inside of the hub but that was a failure. Choosing a physical position to then make adjustments depends on what lifting mechanism you have.
