IPK mode 19 sub section 6 verified

Tested out 2 more ZT’s that I had in the yard and I can confirm that when the float reaches the full mark the IPK diagnostics reads
1.6.2 _ _ 0570 so only reads 57 litres at full even though the tank had 62 litres this is now the 3 time I’ve had this reading at full so I can confirm this is the expected result, would have taken photos, but iPhone went flat as usual

Maybe some of the bmw’s only have a useable fuel limit of 60 litres, hence the IPK diagnostics mode only reads up to 57

Did you notice the Test 6.0 readouts? Did they tally with 57 litres?

It's starting to look like the maximum readout for a 'full' tank is 57 litres, whether or not there's actually more in the tank. If I had to guess, I'd say this is the default figure for both floats being at maximum resistance* - effectively as high as they'll go on the arm. The fuel surface may be a bit higher.

I just want to point out that my numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt. A couple of them came from my memory which may be past its use by date.

Yesterday, I started the car and the Low Fuel light was on. I was parked on a hill nose up. I had driven about 725 kms of mixed driving and playing with it. When I moved the car level the light went out. Keep in mind my fuel gauge does not work. When full it indicates the 8:00 position. After using some (maybe 1/4-1/2 tank) it will move to the 6:00 position - empty. Those are the only 2 positions.

I drove about another 25 kms and filled the tank - 52 litres. So I figure there was maybe 54 litres in it when the light was on, but it was uphill so, who knows. Anyway, if the max possible reading is 57 litres and my light came on with 52-54 litres gone, that could be accurate.

After I filled it up yesterday I drove around town a bit and then home (about 35-40 kms). I'll run through the tests again now when I go out and take pictures og the results so I can report them accurately. Still parked on a hill, though, but if the senders are more or less centered in the tank (fore and aft) it might not make much difference to the accuracy.

Edit: Good numbers - 37.1 kms into a fresh tank of fuel, --6.0 > --0570, --6.1 > ------, 1_6.2 > --0568

I can add a bit more to this, I had to fill the car up this morning before I went out so filled the tank and as previously seen

6.0 = 000570
1_6.2 = 000570

I then drove roughly 30 miles and rechecked again and there was only minimal change, the first figure was the same, the second one read 000562. The fuel gauge needle was just around 1/8 by the time I returned home having covered around 60 miles.

the readings then were 000518 and 000522 respectively. Interesting that the figure on 6.0 appeared to fluctuate a bit due to sloshing as I stopped but 1_6.2 didn't, so is this damped perhaps?

Still haven't got a clue what any of this means, I just fill up with petrol when I need to an accept that my gauge appears more pessimistic at the lower end of the scale.

I'd guess a 30 mile trip would consume between 4 and 5 litres, but the reading of _ _ 0562 indicates only 0.8 litres. This could be why the needle in these cars hardly falls at all for a while after topping up the tank. Logically, with 64 litres actually present, but only 57 litres recorded for maximum rheostat setting, there's a lag. I realise the numbers here are rough, but it could be the reason.

Not sure I understand. You mean the gauge was down to 1/8?

The readings then were 000518 and 000522 respectively.

So about 12 litres total consumed. Does that tally with your normal MPG?

Not sure I understand. You mean the gauge was down to 1/8?

The gauge needle had dropped down approx. 1/8

adjusted the figures up a bit as the car is now on level ground but roughly 23 mpg so about right. I think the 1_6.2 figure is stabilised or damped as this incremented slowly as I parked the car on the level.
