If the Commons try and overturn the public vote, I would predict public unrest.

As one of the reasons to leave was primacy of our parliament this is surely a good thing.
I doubt it'll change anything, just the mechanisms of leaving. |

You are correct TM - to me the voters voted - so parliament know the strong feelings of the majority of England and Wales - and it was a significant "Leave" vote across these two countries apart from inner London.
But I have been worried for some time that if article 50 is invoked now without a proper parliamentary debate then Scotland and NI would have a justifiable gripe. (So speaking as an Englishman - I really would not want to give Scotland yet another perceived slight that would enhance the already overly large chip they carry on their shoulders ) I expect the will of the overall majority of the people will be honoured. If Scotland sees this as a reason to have another referendum then that is seriously OK with me. I was disappointed in the outcome of the last Scottish Referendum. So here I would suggest we take a leaf out of Europe's "Book" and keep having Scottish Independence Referenda until we all get the result everyone wants. |
