Default Rover CDti Tourer Rattle..end of the line maybe?

My Rover 75 CDTi has been owned my myself...twice.. has covered 100k in the 10 years of ownership, my Sons (twins) have both owned and abused it, its just possible that it has entered its final stage. My Son (Chris) has been running it for 12 months without any kind of servicing..oil checks..etc and it has developed a rattle that is actually quite loud now..it doesn't use a lot of oil and starts and runs well any ideas anybody..otherwise has the car any value at all it was a Factory demonstrator and carries a detachable towbar and HID headlights and a beautiful wooden steering wheel I wonder if any of these might be of use or should I just scrap the blighter..which seems a rotten shame

I would suggest that it could be a stretched timing chain.

I'd investigate the rattle, it could be a tensioner or a pulley that once replaced restores normal service. 100k is nothing to the diesel engine. Don't scrap it! Lee.

Agreed. I can't see a timing chain stretching in 100,000 miles. I CAN see a crankshaft pulley failing and making the exact noise you describe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPlLav4ulp8 I think that is also a fairly common failure. Don't scrap it, yet. Just broken in.

Cheers,
Glenn

Bottom pulley, check if the noise goes away when revved.

A timing chain issue is very unlikely at 100k, mines done 232k and is fine.

I'll go along with the bottom pully.

Brian,

Put it for sale on this Forum. Someone may be looking for a Project car.

Peter.
