Default Driveshaft wear.

How can I diagnose driveshaft wear on a manual 75 diesel tourer?
I have a sort of chafing noise, and after looking, I can lift both the shafts, up and down about 2mm.
Should they be tighter than this?
The discs and brakes seem to rotate with little noise, as I first suspected a wheel bearing.
I have read, to drive on full lock, and listen for noise from the cv joints?

Regards Paul.

Yes, I'd say so. It's too sloppy IMO and is a sign of wear. New shafts don't slop, but on that alone I doubt yours are anywhere near failing.

That's a simple test you can use to check for excess wear in 'planetary ball' type CVJs (like the outer ones). Slowly drive forward and turn full lock right. Continue driving very slowly in a circle. Excess wear on the right side ball gears will result in a distinct, periodic knock as each of the six balls take up the drive stresses. Repeat to the left for the LHS. An obvious knock means a new joint is due.
