Default Happy Birthday to the Spitfire

The Supermarine Spitfire is 80 years old today. The most iconic warbird of all time first took to the skies on this date in 1936. A magnificent example of British engineering at its very best.

Believe it or not i climbed up York Minster a few years ago on a club trip and a Spitfire was flying overhead .

I was amazed at the display AND the speed .

A real treat.

More accurately a man ahead of his time.

http://www.rjmitchell-spitfire.co.uk...sp?sectionID=1

Check out what influenced him in the design of the Spitfire.

Thank goodness they settled on the name Spitfire:

Achtung Snipe or Shrew really does not have quite the same sense of urgency does it?

If anyone has not yet seen Guy Martin explaining about what happened when he cranked up a RR Merlin engine on the ground - or if you just want a reminder - here is the link.

Priceless.
