Default Monarch Airline Bust

Monarch went in to administration at 4 am a time when all planes on the ground. Casualty of exchange rates following Brexit or ?

Hi Dave T,

Sorry to hear it.

If you have a package deal and ATOL certificate or paid by credit card, you should be OK but, naturally it will ruin a lot of folks holidays.

Gordon.

You got it right in my opinion, the low GBP against the US dollar. British Aiways predicted last year this would happen and would have a knock on effect on the industry this year and next year as a consequence of Brexit. There are those who argued at the time that it was a price worth paying. The passengers want the lowest prices and the industry's competitiveness will force airlines with small profit margins out of the game.

Sad folks have lost holidays I know but there will be a few pilots out of work...... perhaps a move that could sort out the Ryanair mess.

Hi Dave, if you paid by debit card, you will have a problem getting your money back as it has less protection and would become a debt of money owed to you. Your holiday if it was a package would be protected by ATOL. Check all your receipts, copy everything and check with the ATOL website what action to take. Do it as soon as possible.

At the end of May in the British Airways debacle we got stuck in Sardinia and had to fork out over £1000 to get home, this was for extra flights and hotels etc which we had to arrange ourselves. 6 weeks later we received our money back plus EU compensation of 500 euros for the delays and cancellations. Took me 3 days of phone calls and emails to sort out. It can be done, but you need to be on top of your records, have a contact name and their direct number. Check your travel insurance and if you took it out the cover, contact their hot line.

I am really sorry to hear this news. Check with the other tour operators ...the reps in your accommodation such as Thomson Holidays, Thomas Cook, Britannia Aiways etc to see if they are going to repatriate holiday makers who are caught up in this. Sometimes airlines will have reciprocal agreements with each other for dealing with these situations.

According to the news everyone abroad will be brought home at no extra cost. Also that people have no need to return home early, just enjoy the remainder of your holiday.
Those that booked a package holiday will get refunded..... eventually. Those with flight only tickets may have a problem apparently due to no ATOL license for this type of booking.

The demise is nothing to do with Brexit. Monarch didnt move with the times. Companies like Easy Jet and Ryanair made cheap flights within the grasp of the masses. Monarch though were more traditional and this is not what the mainstream of people want now. There is some interesting facts about them on the BBC website.
