Default Hire Cars

I was talking with a chap from the car rental company 'Enterprise' yesterday, and I was surprised in what he had to say about how much business they get from people who actually don't want to own a car.

He tells me more so the older generation, that many of these customers would rather not own a car. They would rather hire a car for a few days to a week when they feel the need to go somewhere, first I was taken back, but then I thought how practical it was.

I suppose people lose interest in driving, myself included, I can see why some people choose not to own and run a car.

Makes sense to some I guest.

Not just the older generation Wes..

The total number of 17-year-olds taking driving tests per year has fallen by 100,000 (28pc) since 2007/8

it used to be quite common in the seventies over here too. People would have hired cars instead of taxis if they were going out a fair distance from home. (I do it sometimes when on holiday, sometimes works out cheaper depending on where I am staying)

I can see myself doing something similar in the not too distant future, Owning/driving a car these days doesn't hold the same enjoyment it once did, I'll be looking to do the same or join one of those E-car membership schemes!!!

my cousin hires a car from time to time but mainly uses public transport. Public transport just is not convenient enough for me to make it my choice.

These poor youngsters cant afford to pass their driving test these days can they? poor old mum and day. The cost of driving lessons and then there's the insurance, and not forgetting the cost of the car in the first place, the mind boggles.

I have one at UNI who passed her test age 19, cost us a small fortune it did. She takes her car with her to UNI but leaves it at her UNI dig as no parking is allowed at the university. Now we got to do it all again with our youngest who is currently in sixth form, its not easy for them or us parents is it?

I believe buying a car will be a thing of the past, leasing and hiring is the way forward by the looks of things. Plus, public transport has never been so trendy.

Most folk want new cars, A to B driving with no maintenance and no MOT's. I find many youngsters still like to catch public transport, even though they have passed their test and have a car, my daughter and her friends do.

Times are changing.

Cool

I used to hire cars rather than buying one. Working in the City of London as well. Only ever wanted a car at the weekend. Had a good relationship with a local garage, Barkingside Motor Company, who used let me have some nice motors at very reasonable costs. Collect Friday afternoon and drop the car back on the way to work on a Monday morning. Just used to drop the keys in the drop box. No deposit to collect either.

Had some nice motors like; Austin Metro, Talbot Sunbeam, Talbot Horizon, Hillman Avenger, Talbot Solaro, Austin Allegro 1750 sport and a Jaguar XJ6.

A relative of mine who lives in London does not own a car for a couple of reasons, he has no where to park it so would incur a parking charge and he uses public transport to get to work. He has his shopping delivered and a bus a tube stop are about a 5 min walk from his house

When he needs a car the rental company he uses drops it off at his place of work or his house and when he no longer needs it they collect it. Sometimes he will hire a car for a couple of weeks like when he is on holiday.

His total car hire cost are about £1500 a year, that sounds a lot but I suspect most of us here spend that or more on running our cars when you factor in insurance, tax, repairs and of course depreciation.

He has had some great cars, I think his best ever was a top spec Range Rover, it was an upgrade as the car he had booked had not returned, the delivery driver apologised apparently as some people wont take a bigger car.

If I lived anywhere in or around London and did not have off street parking, I would not own a car but just hire one when needed.

If we are not going to a car related event with the Middlebridge or R75 , always hire now when doing any reasonable distance.

Would rather put mileage, wear and tear etc on a hire car which invariably are brand new and it is fun and interesting to drive all the latest technology.

Since we do it so often, we have specialist insurance for this so don't have to pay on each individual hire .......this is important as this is where the hiring company make a lot of money. This hiring policy is Worldwide and covers up to 7 drivers.

When picking up check the car thoroughly and take photos of any marks, dents etc......especially kerbing on the wheels. Again this is an area where rental firms try to make money by claiming damage was done during your period of hire. Try to do full to full for fuel as they again invariably claim that you have returned it with less if it is a like for like arrangement, and then charge a set amount to cover. Again a photo of the fuel gauge at pick up is good if you have to do this latter method.
