Default Do I swap my MAF...hmmm.

I have black soot on the back of the car, sometimes a light film forms even up as far as the number plate. It's easy to clean off, but I guess it is a sign of overfuelling. I ave around low 30's and best ever was 42 mpg on a long run.. Sooo -- Question is ---

Should I fit the Pierberg MAF I have, or do I stick with the existing Bosh one?

Assuming that I decide to fit it, what exactly is involved please?

*Note:- I am currently running with a Synergy2 set on number 6 and have no complaints re the cars performance... *

If you do decide to swap it over James, it's a direct swap. The only possible problem will be the two security screws which hold the MAF sensor in place. They are 5-pointed TORX bolts with the pin in the centre. If you don't have the correct tool they can usually be removed with a decent pair of mole grips or pliars gripping the periphery.

James,
Yes I also get low 30s, and I have changed MAF etc with no difference to mpg.
I found running a hacksaw blade through the middle of the screws and using a screwdriver was quite easy and then replacing with pozi self tappers quite easy.
Are you sure the injectors are ok?
Does the smoke start getting less after a high rev motorway burn in 3rd?
Matt

Hi Paul. I have a set of Torx thanks, the Citroen has a lot of torx screws in it, getting the incentive to use em is my problem! lol..

Hi Matt. Not sure but I expect the injectors are well worn at 150k, but the car starts easily and runs well, so is it worth spending £400 + on them??

I am very heavy footed, so doubt the cars getting sooted up. I do give it a mex tune up fairly often as well..

Hmmm, just done a check on the amount of fuel used during last weeks holiday in Dorset. (brim to brim) 80 litres used to cover 810 miles = 46 mpg... That's the best so far, but Scribbler drove it quite a lot in and around Poole, and he's a very steady driver.

Hi James,

I changed my Bosch Maf for one of these.
The difference since has been very good, no smoke, the stutter I got around 2000 revs has totally gone and the car is now running the best it has ever done since I have owned her! obviously it is early days but I'm well pleased.
I had the car re-mapped 3 years ago which made a great difference to the torque and, of course, the performance.
With this in mind, that was why I stuck with the Bosch one, although bit scared of the EBay one's as I had read of a few problems with some of them.

Chances are those will be all 6 point James, the maf ones are 5 point security ones with the hole for the central pin

James, as Russ says it's a 5 point TS25, whatever that is?
If you want to change the maf send me a pm with your address and I will loan you mine, if you like.

"TS" is Torx security which basically means the normal torx bits don't fit as you need a recess in the centre of the bit.
Halfords do stock a cheap set of security ones though.

Thanks John,
Couldn't think what the "TS" stood for, but you have cleared that up for me.

Thanks for the kind offer Rammie but I will get the screws out one way or another.

Well I know where the MAF plug is that I plugged the Synergy into, but where does the MAF itself live? And how do I access it?
