Default Warm Weather and.............

The slow speed on the cooling fan gives up the ghost.
Is it still safe to drive? will the medium and high speeds still work?
Looks like ill be missing the AC Will have to see if the windows work.
Looks like a phone call to Jules is on the cards

So you have a 3-speed system? I guess the aircon is in constant use.

Hi Tcut

yes its the older 3speed type. I dont really use the AC, just now and again to keep it running. Its kind of how i noticed, i didnt hear the fan cut in. I presume the faster speeds are working as the car hasnt over heated (according to the guage)

A previous owner maybe. The slow speed typically fails around 60k miles due to loss of a motor brush due to regular aircon use. The standard fix is a new fan unfortunately. Some have managed to replace the brushes but it's far from certain to succeed.

The temperature gauge is pretty meaningless actually. It won't move up until 115C+, so beyond fan territory.

I'm afraid you'll have to use the SR270 back-up system to keep cool

Hmmm, three speed fans, the brush that wears is the one on the black wire, this is the negative path for the slow and medium speeds. the top speed uses a second negative brush.

With this in mind when the slow speed fails, (unless it is the relay) then the medium speed also fails. You are then left with the top speed only. This will work untill the worn brush from the 1st negative throws it's self in to the motor as a final act of destruction.

After that the fan motor is scrap

Interestingly.............

Thought id use the onboard diagnostic to see what was happening to the coolant temp. On the way to work it held a steady 89-90.c
Got held up a bit on the final stretch and as i got into the work car park 108.c was the reading AND NO FAN! It appears all 3 speeds have stopped working, ive checked the fuses and all seem ok. Think ill stop using the car till Jules's fan arrives.
