OUCH!!..Trikey is there any way i can tell ? was about to take the car out for a drive see if anything and gets hot and pick up shopping but am reluctant to do so now...what would happen if that scenario were to happen pls?

Try levering the pulley wheel outwards, if it moves then you have a problem.

Yes, you might see some damage to the edge of the belt if it has been loose for a while.

Sticking belt tensioner maybe? Have a go at at moving it to see if it moves freely or erratically. The best way would be to remove the belt and check all the pulleys and driven wheels for free movement, damage etc.
