Default I seem to have bricked my Sat Nav

Flushed with success after getting the DVB T installed I decided to upgrade my mk3 satnav to a mk4 which arrived in todays post.
I swapped over and all was fine apart from the lack of a Rover splash screen.
I can soon sort that I thought so onto the pc and after playing with navtweak and imgburn i had my update disc ready to go.
It got to the updating screen saying up to six minutes and 35 minutes later was still there. No sign of any progress bar. I could not stay waiting indefinitley as I was being summoned so I turned the ignition off.
The cd just kept whirring away and the unit did not shut down after several minutes nor would the cd eject.
Although it verified ok I suspect it could not read ot and caused it to hang.
In the end i pulled the plug on it and put my mk3 back in.
A pity as i really liked what i saw in my brief encounter with the mk4.
Dont know if there is anyway back as before i pulled the plug on it i did turn ignition back on and no navigation on menu and no updating screen.
It had been a good day until then. The car should have behaved I even polished it today.

i thought the mk4 could read CDs as well.
This one did as i took the nav CD from my Mk3 to try it out and all was fine - until I decided to update the software.
I should have quit when I was winning.
I wonder if it would try to continue the update if I refitted it
I must admit I am not too hopefull on that score.
Could it have new software flashed onto it I wonder?

Got to find something to do during lockdown.
The past few weeks have been all garden and redecorating.
Wish I had quit while I was ahead though.

All sorted and updated ( it only took a couple of minutrs to complete) with a V32 stock version now.
As I said before with the CD in it it only got as far as the screen saying it was going to update. It stayed there and did not even show the progress bar screen.
The first CD I had burned on my laptop which has a minimum write speed of 8x. Although the CD verified ok the Nav unit obviously had trouble reading it and it just stuck there. Even once the ignition was off the nav unit did not shut down. I had to remove the plugs from the back. No way would the CD eject. I tried again this morning, trying to press eject as soon as it came on but no joy.

Now for the cure that worked for me.
Hopefully others may find it usefull if they find themselves in a similar situation.
After removing the unit I carefully prised the top off.
There are no screws holding it on.
You will see the motor on the right hand side of the top. It is held on by a single torx screw T6 i think.
Unscrew this and carefully move the motor slightly to the side to gain access to the larger cog that the motor pinion engages with.
Using two small screwdrivers, one to move the cog in a clockwise direction and the other to hold the cog in position so it does not spring back while you re engage the first screwdriver. Repeat until the offending disk is ejected.

Once I had done this I burned a stock V32 DVD update disc on my dinosaur tower system which I dug out from beneath the shed bench. This had the benefit of being able to write at 1x speed.
With the disk burnt and verified I took it to the car.
Drivers door open, ignition in position 1 I inserted the newly burnt DVD. By the time I got to the drivers seat I was just in time to see the Software updating screen be replaced by the progress bar which fairly whizzed along.
Once done the unit spat out the Update disk which I replaced with the map disk. Back to the drivers seat and hit "ok" Nav system rebooted.
Then the moment of truth - had removing the plugs while "hot" damaged the unit?
Ignition off back to the boot and a slightly anxious wait to see if the unit shut down ok.
After its customary dawdle the led went out.
Relief!
Job done.

But I now have the BMW splash screen.

Hmm!
Should I burn another DVD on the dinosaur with the Updated logo and try again?
Or should I let sleeping dogs lie?

Morning

I'm in the same boat - Mk IV DVD drive, but no Rover splash screen.

If you manage to burn a disc with an old style rover logo on it I'd love a copy (happy to exchange beer vouchers for postage etc).

Cheers

I am tempted to have another go.
If I do and it works on mine I will PM you for address and I will send a disk in the post to you. No beer tokens required.
