Default Honda quitting Europe

Blimey! Honda to stop selling conventional ICE cars in Europe by 2022. https://insideevs.com/news/458243/eu...ice-cars-2022/

That's less work for Southampton docks as the some Civics are exported from there.

I'm a bit confused about this statement from Honda:

"....Honda notes also that today it's difficult to go all-electric from a simple reason of economics. BEVs are "a third to 50% more expensive than a conventional or hybrid vehicle". Hybrids on the other hand "don’t take us the full way"....."

Are they more expensive for Honda to make?

Or more expensive for a consumer to buy?

Or more expensive somewhere else?

And what makes them more expensive? Surely it can't be the parts as, AFAIK, BEV's have far less because there's no pistons, con rods, crank etc. etc. but maybe the batteries cost ££££££££'s

.

Looking forward to being enlightened.

Purely the cost of batteries for Honda, They are late to the BEV market & have no meaningful battery supply to manufacture EV's at volume although they have teamed up with GM to use their skateboard platform & Ultium batteries in the USA. The skateboard battery pack & electric motor/charging system etc are relatively cheap from what I've read. Their line up of cars cant meet the EU emission standards & they're just throwing money away having to pay Tesla for carbon credits to the tune of a few hundred million €uros, FCA have had to do the same & are/have paid Tesla around €2billion in carbon credits also, Tesla are basically getting these Gigafactories built with free money.

But the whole story is nothing new, have volvo not already done the same thing last year, only worldwide as opposed to Honda's Europe only approach (prompted by the eu regs on car sales no doubt).

Development costs of a relatively new technology especially to a relatively inexperienced manufacturer.

Batteries will be a large part of the cost, although 6 year old Tommy mining the cobalt will be peanuts.

Developing hybrid tech to work with an existing ice, then developing a dedicated ice with hybrid use from.the oustset.

I wonder if they will plan for an earlier abandonment of use before 2035?

Honda will continue to produce ice for the us market whilst there is still the demand - it is the best selling car manufacturer I believe, followed by toyota.
