Most of the newer BEV's have pre heating/pre conditioning nowadays which automatically raises the battery pack temperature in cold weather ready to receive a full charge when you plug the car in.

Here's a question! What will happen to the filling stations in upcoming Towns & City CAZ & ULEZ's? Will they still be viable businesses only being able to cater for Euro Cat 6 vehicles which will only be allowed into the zones?
I can see most of them being retrofitted with fast chargers for BEV's. I read yesterday that 1 in 10 new cars are now Hybrid,PHEV or BEV and we're nowhere near parity with ICE cars yet.

They reckon the magic number is $100/Kwh to reach a level playing field with ICE vehicles, they're currently at $156/Kwh. They say it will take two more years for the cost of batteries to come down to that level.

All depends on your requirements or how you use the car! I personally wouldn't ever need to use a fast charger except to try one out, I have no commute since retiring & still use public transport 50-50 with my hybrid Niro. For me I'd plug it in overnight and program the car to start charging between 12:00am-4:00am as my utility company have a BEV tariff which costs 5p/Kwh, The pre-heating would take power from my house, It would cost literally pennies to wake up to a "full tank" every morning.


Or! VW have just announced yesterday they're installing 2400 chargers in 600 Tesco stores and they will be FREE CHARGING while you shop so you could pre-condition then for nowt.

And how much range is used up heating the cabin in the cold winter months?
And if anyone says that it's negligible, them perhaps they can explain why the amount of electric power to heat a house isn't equally low (pro-rata by volume)? Bearing in mind that the majority of houses these days are much better insulated than your car and have a lower surface area to volume ratio...

As already said, in most instances the battery sits on a heated ‘mat’ to ensure optimum temperature.

No range is used by heating the battery, It’s negligible as it’s heated using 12 volts and not the high voltage battery, the same as the cabin which is also 12 volts. The AC compressor is however high voltage

There aren’t that many cars out there under 11k new, certainly not with the same spec as the Leaf
