Update:

Despite Brian’s optimist “Keep going, you will get there” things are not going well. I tried borrowing back my old Compaq NC6120 XP machine and installing the software on that, but no further along the path unfortunately. No flashing led lights on the handheld interface and still problems with the cable. Beginning to loose faith, but a couple of questions.

Is the parallel port actually necessary or was it just a means to print?
What’s the default position of the toggle switch, just visible or pressed in?
The computer doesn’t like DST0006V but will read DST0004, is this a problem?

I’d really like to hear from any T4 operators who use the original Dell C610. I’m afraid my Windows skills are very limited, and I’d appreciate any help I can get in bringing the T4 back to life.

Help!

Strictly speaking you dont need to change the duplex or speed settings for the NIC on the laptop unless you have a very early T4 interface with old firmware, most units work fine using auto negotiation.

"No flashing led lights on the handheld interface" - can you explain further as the T4 interface is certainly not a handheld device!

Many thanks for taking the time to reply - The first laptop I used was the original Dell (?). Brian advised I should set the IP etc manually, but confused as I believe when I install the RDS it says something about Network setting(?).

Sorry for my ignorance but I don't know what the various parts are called. Brian referred to a green led next to the LAN socket on the interface. The only part I can see which matches his description is the bay where the handheld device lives.

I get no flashing lights when I try to connect to a car, the T4 tells me there's a problem with the long cable, tells me to use the blue lead rather than the red one and finally gives me a telephone number to Omitec.

Regards

That makes it clearer, you have the "docking station" T4 from a trolley system.

May sound like a silly question but is the unit plugged into the mains and powered? A green LED will be lit on the opposite side of the unit from the power plug.

To answer you original question, yes i still have the original Dell laptop with one of my systems and it works fine.

Yes it is powered up, the handheld device lights up and there's a green LED light.

I'll PM you a bit later, I hope that's OK?

Thanks but I got a message saying that Phil doesn't accept PMs. But no worry, he very quickly sent me a mail, so we're in touch.

Default Happy days ...

Sounds like Brian could be right again with his "You'll get there" ...

After God knows how many hours & re-installing XP on two different machines, I have at last managed to connect the T4 to my daughter’s Tourer (which is awaiting much deferred cambelts). Why now? Not sure, driver issue perhaps, or as suggested by Phil a regional setting. Curiously DST0006V still won’t load but an older DST0004 does (after reinserting).

It is however a joy to know that the T4 actually works, even flashing LEDs. As the unit was destined for the tip and hadn't been used for years, I was unsure of its state.

Thanks to many, primarily to MarinaBrian, Phil-T4, but also Trikey & Terry @ TS Autos for their input. Is this the beginning of the end? - possibly, but now I’ve got to learn to use the machine.

Keep well
