Default Diesel help!

Recently bought a 75 2004 pre face-lift cdti as a non runner

Car would crank over with a new battery but not start.

I have cleared the plenum as it was full of leaves
Checked ecu seemed dry

I cleaned out the egr value as it was sodden with old oil an dirt.

I have used Easy start today and the car started but sounded rough.

I also noticed when idling there was a small amount of oil coming out of the top left hand accostic cover screw hole. Upon putting the screw back in the oil then started coming out of the dipstick

What should I do?

Could be blocked PCV filter - fairly cheap and easy to change. There is a 'how to' on the forum from Steve (Arctic)

..and if there is still any doubt - PCV

But that would not account for the none starting.

The engine ECU is very easily damaged by failing to keep the plenum free to drain. Just looking at it will not give any clue as to whether water has got in or not and once in, it tends to stay in there wrecking the unit. Marinabrian has salvaged and repaired lots of them.

Check the pollen filter, that will often show signs if the plenum has been flooded since it was last replaced.

Only close examination of the PCB inside, will determine whether or not it has been damaged. Easystart, will start any diesel, working ECU or not, but it is a good sign that it continues to sort of run. Don't keep on starting it this way, because the risk is that a pressurised crankcase, could cause the engine to run burning its crankcase oil for fuel, with disastrous consequences.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Hi Jack.
Would you please check if you have an under bonnet fuel pump even though I know you have stated it is a 2004, some cars of that age still have them as do a few 2005.

If so once you have removed and changed the PCV filter which a couple of members have touched upon, as above if the UBP is in situ then remove the hose joint going into the fuel filter, put the end into a bottle or container.

Now get someone to turn the ignition to II and see if there is a good flow of fuel without any spluttering, if so replace then remove the electrical connector off the top of the fuel pump spray with contact switch cleaner, push it on and off a few times, do the same to the low pressure pump on top of the fuel filter, making sure you have over a 1/4 tank of fuel then try starting the car.

PS change the PCV filter first.

Changed the pcv filter and car started okay several times after doing this without using easy start so not sure if thats 100% fixed.

Now seem to have a knocking sound from near where the filler cap for the power steering fluid is. I can see the alternator belt below and notice that the belt seems to move very slightly across one of the pullys.

See if it disappears when you rev the car up.. if it does you need a new crank pulley
