Steve, yes i do have an inline stat. There is no fluid in the expansion tank when I check each morning and I am having to add about 100ml each day (40 mile round trip) to bring it up to maximum. . At the motorway services the breakdown mechanic had to add about 4 litres to get to maximum and so may have been leaking unnoticed for a while.

According to the onboard diagnostics, engine temperature is running at 84-86C when not towing. Yesterday when stationery in traffic I noticed a little steam coming from the offside of the bonnet\grill and so strong chance it could be thermostat or water pump dripping. I understand replacement of these is a big job (around 4hrs labour) as there is little point changing one without the other and so will have to decide where we go from here. Will report back once I've had chance to get the under tray off at the weekend for a better look.
The temp looks to be ok at the above readings you have posted, so inline stat is opening ok, try the demist test just to make sure the fan is running as it should.

All A/C off ignition to II no need to start the car press demist button and see if fan is running continually through the front grill, but if 4ltrs were added then you must have a leak.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that my car hates me

Just been round to a small garage near work who have worked on the car in the past to see if they could take a look at it next week for me. Arrived only to find they are closed for holidays until 30th July, so I pull out of their car park and as i do so I loose power steering & the battery light comes on and quickly I realise the engine has shed the auxiliary drive belt, presumably due to the water leak.

Made it the half mile back to work without the engine boiling over but now stuck. No trains running for next two weeks due to electrification of the line and so looks like I have the pleasure of bus transport for the forseeable.

Can anyone advise how easy is is to refit the auxiliary belt so that I can get it to a garage.

Hi Richard.
Not that hard to fit if you have done one before the worst part is making sure you have a spanner to fit the tensioner 24mm, aviation spanner ground down is best in my opinion, which I doubt most people would have, I would also change the compressor belt at the same time as these are most always in a bad condition.

Use only good belts Gates are the best then maybe Conitech link below.

Thanks for the info Steve, but I think that is probably beyond my ability as I don't have any specialist spanners.

Work have said I can leave the car here overnight but will need to get it shifted tomorrow and so I will have to see if I can nurse her to the nearest garage in the morning and get them to re-fit the existing auxiliary belt.

If it has shed the drivebelt and was anything like mine, then sorry but you won't be able to refit it.

The water pump outer shaft bearing had collapsed, throwing the belt off:

It did do well though - original and failed just shy of 300,000 miles.

Garage has confirmed that water pump is shot and so not possible to refit the belt. Have been quoted £432 to replace pump & stat or £330 if I supply the parts.

That price seems a bit steep - it is about 2-3 hours work to swap the water pump/stat and refit the belt, so labour should not be more than 150-200 pounds.
