Default help with using spring compressors

I cant seem to compress the front springs enough to reassemble the front strut.
I have a pair of Draper spring compressors and can get about 220mm gap. The jaws would then close to grab the springs. I seem to think I need to grab one extra coil of the spring and so need compressors that can open to some 300mm.

For those that have compressed the front spring, what size are your compressors?

Any tips for compressing the springs?

I'm wondering if I can compress the spring and tie it off, undo the compressor and then reattach it to the next coil but I really don't like this idea.

life is so bleedin hard

I’ve used the tie off method a few times, use a ratchet strap wrapped around several times.

Still makes ya bum twitch though!

I only use 'double hook' compressors on the 75 front springs - it can be hard work to get enough compression if using single hook compressors, even with three placed on the spring. Two double hook compressors normally do the job, and I think are a bit safer, as they are less likely to slip.

this

this is the type I've got.
Eastpete, what type have you got?

Trikey, I don't have ratchet straps, just the type you pull through and hope don't slip back. A sprig loaded "lever" presses into the strap to stop it sliding back.

I think those are the same ones I have - I have just checked and the maximum opening is 220 mm. You have a play around a bit to find the best location for placing the compressors to get the right degree of 'squeeze, but I have used these 2 or 3 times now on 75 front springs with no problems.

I've given up. A local workshop from my previous employer have said they will reassemble for me if I help to restock their tea club.

I have been nervous of the spring compressors flying off and me catching one in the face or the privates. They have however seemed to be locked on well with no indication of movement. Quite hard work getting the spring compressed, I was surprised.

I got a set at the car boot sale only a few weeks after I got a new pair. I'm now regretting selling them on ebay
