Fan not working

I've just replaced the rad and fan assembly on my derv, is there a way of seeing if the fan works , I've tried pressing the demist button but nothing happens, it does have a silver resistor fitted so could this be faulty and should I replace it with a gold one?

The original ('silver') resistor is way under-powered for reliable operation. The first ones MGR used only had a 50watt capacity. Following consistant failures, this was uprated to 75watt, but this too doesn't cut the mustard. You need the 100watt type (typically 'gold' coloured) which you can get from electronics outlets (Farnell, etc., forum traders and from eBay). There are lots of threads/HowTos on doing the job. The front bumper has to come off

I have the front end off at the mo so it make's sense to change it now then, thanks for the help chaps.
