Question Rover 75 CDT Gearbox oil change.

Hi

I have been to the local Land Rover dealer and got the MTF 94 oil.
I reckon it needs it after 132k,it had a recent full clutch change including master/slave,the mechanic also changed the gearbox oil but he only added 1 litre of oil and it has been nagging me that it means I probably have a mixture of new and old oil in the box.

So the plan is to get the gearbox warmed up and put in 2 litres of new oil.

On searching the site,I cannot see an idiots guide(for me) to do the same (it must be there somewhere),obviously bottom protector pan off,but then is it the battery? and which are the drain/fill plugs etc.

Getrag 47R37 gearbox on a 02 diesel.

Any help gladly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Grey Ghost

Many thanks for the quick response.

It is the gearbox oil change that I need help on,not the engine oil change.

Thanks

Hi Greyghost

Many thanks for all the help.

To help any other members, here is a basic description of the task.

1. Oil best removed when warm, but not essential.Be careful if warm/hot.

2.Either get car under an inspection pit or if using jacks etc you must keep the car level to ensure that when refilling you get the correct amount of new oil in.

3. Remove engine undertray.

4.The gearbox can now be seen on the passenger side of the car.

5. The fill/level plug is located directly behind the driveshaft, towards the back of the gearbox. Clean around the filler plug, then remove it.

6.Get a suitable container to collect waste oil, then remove drain plug which is below the filler plug which is surrounded by a collar and in front of the driveshaft.

7.After you have got the old oil out, refit the drain plug and tighten it to the necessary torque. 35Nm 26 lb ft

8. Make sure the car is level then put new oil into the gearbox(this could be a bit awkward)through the filler/level plug until oil starts to come back out, keeping the car high if on jacks will help, but accuracy of fill may be affected,so keep it as level as possible.

9. Make sure you have 2 litres of oil available. I am using MTF94 which is the recommended oil. Available from Land rover dealers,I was told though that they are stopping using it and will be using the Castrol SMX-S,when stocks run out.(Might just be the garage I went to).

10. When you are happy, refit filler plug, torque up and then put the car back together.

11. Glad it only needs doing only every 90k or 6 years.

When the rain/snow/wind stops and I do it myself,I will try and get a photo of the 2 plugs and post up unless somebody already has one.

New PCV next.

Cheers

Johnmac
