I'm changing the plugs on my 1.8T today, it's been a few months since this thread started - how have your cars been with the gap set at .5mm? No adverse effects?

Humm I have a power loss / stutter at certain rpm ranges ....mi did the turbo pipes at the weekend which has improved things but still the odd stutter ....
My initial thoughts where a coil breaking down but maybe I will just check the plugs ..... Or even just pick up new ones and try gaping to 0.5 mm and see what happens

Personally I think 0.5mm is too small a gap.

Mine are gapped to 0.8mm and its spot on.

Take each plug out and reset the outer electrode closer to the centre electrode. The outer electrode bends with a little force. Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap. If you still can't do it, Google for 'How to set spark plugs' and you'll find lots of info.

Sorry to be a bit of a damp squib but isn't the need to drop the gap to 0.5 mm ( which is only 20 thou in Morris Minor money ) a sign of something poorly in the sparks dept ? Ancient coils used to be able to fire a 25 thou gap , and modern equipment is vastly more powerful with very high voltages , hence the manufacturers recommendation of 1mm or 40 thou
