Default Electric accessory plug

'05 2.0 cdti SE - I want to wire in (preferably ignition controlled) a dash cam + phone charger . The handbook is insistent "to not use cigarette lighter socket for accessories" ,and there is no 12v socket in the armrest , or wires below where the plug would be . How do I find the most easily accessible 12v feed somewhere near the cigarette lighter or ashtray ?
Eddie.

Hi Eddie,

The cigar lighter on your 2005 car is shown in the wiring diagrams as being permanently live so that's ruled out if you want it ignition-controlled.

The approach I would take is to find out the current consumption of your dash cam and phone charger. The latter may be quite heavy, of the order of 2 or 3 amps. That will help you to identify the most suitable circuit to use.

Using the cigar lighter socket for the charger will be fine as you'll be using it only when in the car anyway. That leaves the low current dash cam which is easier to deal with.

Hopefully someone who has done it will be able to give you more precise advice.

Simon

I have recently fitted a nextbase dash cam to both our cars, I used the nextbase hardwire kit and piggy backed the radio fuse.

It is not difficult to run a wire from the centre console to the footwell fuse box and you will find spare ignition live and permanent live fuse positions I suspect. You can then fit a cigarette lighter socket into the cubby hole.

Oh poo, bad start to the day, this is attemp 3 to add this, keep closing the wrong tab.

I did this same mod a few years back, memory is a bit foggy now

I used piggy back fuses for each device/circuit.

For the dashcam I used a 'spare' fuse location, as the 12v +ve supply was present (foggy bit) in this case ONLY use the new circuit in the piggy back.

This should help with the fuse box:

I'll try and get a pic later, as the cats/dogs are falling ! (it's raining)

As promised, here is a pic of my fuse box behind the glovebox:

I have 3 additional piggyback fuses.
1 - 12V permanent live (FBH remote GSM)
2 - 12V Ign live for USB/Temp Sensor/DashCam
3 - Required as part of the Rover Towbar wiring harness install.
