VAT on Postage
Is it just me that gets annoyed and thinks it's a rip off, but I have just ordered some parts (Trailing Arm Bushes for Rover 75) from Rimmer Bros when you get to the check out you then add postage and then they add VAT now surely adding VAT to goods is one thing, but to Add onto Postage as well? Since when did you go to post a parcel and they quote you VAT
Places like Rimmers seem to have the monopoly on parts so get away with this, and it does not surprise me that many members to to the Bay of Fleas for 'cheaper alternatives' Sorry rant over.

You'll probably find they will be being sent via a courier, and then VAT is applicable.
Post via Royal Mail (and possibly Parcel Force) is Zero rated.

We have to charge VAT on postage, as does everyone else - the difference with Royal Mail is we can't claim it back, so it actually works out more expensive than using another courier of the same price.
Any service provided by a VAT registered company, with a few exceptions of course, is VAT chargeable. Postage is, and has always been one of them. It's something I've had to read up on since because VAT registered.

Just to add a query on v.a.t. i watch a lot of daytime tv. What puzzles me that someone buying something at an auction pays v.a.t. which goes to the government, but the seller also has to pay v.a.t. That does not seem right to me. If i buy something off company or trader on here i may have to pay v.a.t.,does the seller also pay v.a.t.

Think you'll find the auction house, as per contract, invoice both buyer and seller for their services, thus VAT is payable on the cost of services received.
P&P often includes an amount over and above postage costs, to cover packing materials and time, again VAT is payable on the total service, not new, always been that way.

Rimmers are fine for that genuine, and sometimes exclusive part, but their postage charges? Oh boy, hate it, and as you say, you more often don't realise you've been stung until you've placed the order.

Common practice for mail from riders Keith, all the suppliers I deal with for work do this, I recently ordered a part costing 29quid, postage was 7.75, then vat on the lot,,total cost around 44quid.

Why the rant at Rimmers? If you do not like their prices, don't buy from them. Or, better still, start selling the same parts and providing the same level of service at a lower price. Then come back in 2 year's time and take the moral high ground. Quality costs. Rimmers is a quality company that provides excellent service for the MG/Rover marque. |
