Saw this in a badge may be 40ish years ago and has stuck with me ever since.

Wars will cease whe men refuse to fight.

PoW was a Cherry Tree ship, cut down by the 1922 Washington Treaty. Bismarck was built with some disregard to the limiting factors set out by the treaty. Her Captain, John Leach, was to face a Court-Martial as he didn't continue with the action against Bismarck. The RN, her ships and Captains do not turn away from a fight with the enemy; no matter the odds. If he had continued though PoW fate would no doubt have been the same. Sadly he was killed in action when PoW was lost in the Pacific along with the battle cruiser Repulse, but that's another tragic story.

Pub trivia: In the film Sink the Bismarck, Leach was played by the actor Esmond Knight. Knight was on the PoW at the time of the action. John Pertwee served aboard Hood but was transferred off prior to her loss.

Not sure if you'll be able to read it, but this is the account of the Battle of Denmark Strait from P.o.W.

Further information here:

http://www.hmshood.org.uk/reference/...guns.htm#s1146

Hood was hit by Prinz Eugen which caused a fire in the ready-use ammuniton, this fire helped Bismarck target her.

PoW had to avoid the blazing and sinking wreck.
