Why
is there a smell of diesel exhaust fumes coming from the front of my CDTI when I start it up first thing in the morning

Most likely the Webasto auxiliary fuel burning heater. It should operate automatically when the engine is cold and ambient air temperature is below 5 deg C. To check you can feel the hot exhaust gas from it just to the side of the nearside front wheel.

As mine is a 2003 Club SE I did not think that these were fitted

It was an option. Take a look in the engine bay nearside in front of the battery.

I have disconnected the vacuum pipe from the EGR, would that cause the fumes smell

Not sure, when I blanked my EGR I didn't get a good seel to the pipe, and exhaust gases escaped in the engine bay
Did you remove it at any point?

Leaking front exhaust (flexi) will cause this, as it did in my old ZT.
