Incidentally both my front springs broke in warm weather, actually when the o/s one broke it was in a heatwave. |

I was driving down a hill on a country lane. At the bottom of the hill the road immediately started to climb up. I hit the dip at about 40 mph and there was a loud bang when a front spring broke. Tyre protectors were fitted and the tyre was undamaged.

If I would not have been in the car, in the moment when the spring did snap, I would probably driven the car long time before noticing the failure. As on the way back to home, there was no difference on how car feeled on the steering wheel. Last edited by JSS; 29th April 2021 at 15:59.. |

I have had protectors fitted to all the cars I owned, I have clocked up over 1,000,000 miles since my launch car. I have had 5 front springs fail, all of them failed at the bottom of the spring on the first coil. So apart from the noise when the unit failed, there was no change in the ride. 4 of the springs that failed have been Off side. over recent years I have had my springs made for the car at 20% up-rated and the offside one with a 140kg higher loading than the nearside. My rears have had 30% upgrade so that the extra 75kg on the tow ball does not cause the car to wallow. 90% of my mileage was done with only one person in the car either the wife or me. Both of us are big people hence the difference in loading side to side. Well worth the half hours work fitting the Rover recall item of spring protectors for a few pounds a side you save damage to a tyre costing anything from £45 to £110 depending on what you fit and where you get it from. Quick note The Gold tourer did not have its new protectors fitted when it had its new Munro struts fitted new owner please take note.
