PS.--I suppose you could measure the THICKNESS of the fluid instead of the driven plate.

Wouldn't be a problem as the OP stated if they left them external to the gearbox like on the Citroen, as it takes all of 10 minutes to change them.


Did a clutch on an Astra a few years back and the quality of the replacement was noticeable compared to our cars.
The first Astra clutches were very, very simple.

1/ Remove the small cover plate at the bottom of the engine and gearbox joint.

2/ Slide the quill shaft out of the end of the gear box.--( 2 minutes max. )

3/ Undo the bolts that hold the cover plate to the flywheel.

4/ Drop the clutch assembly out of the hole between the engine and gearbox.

Up to now about 30 minutes work.--

Reverse order to re-assemble using the quill shaft as the plate aligning tool.

At the time it must have been the easiest car on the market on which to change the clutch.



PS.--The slave cylinder was on the outside of the box.---


PPS.--Don't forget the three clips to hold the cover plate assembly together.--I forgot but it was 20 odd years ago.--Lol.

You forgot fitting the three clips to the cover plate (before undoing the cover plate fixings) to keep the clutch assembly compressed enough to remove through the aperture at the bottom of the bellhousing, i still have some kicking around somewhere in my toolbox....

Sadly Jon the Astra I worked on was a later design so it was a subframe and gearbox off job.

Rumour at the time said this brilliant idea was changed because garages were making too little money out of clutch changes.----

The BW35 autobox in my P6 has a clutch pack inside it. I suspect the Jatco box of the 75 isn't that much different.
