you say you stripped it down but don't say what work you did to it once you had it apart. The caliper just in front of the seal may have crud on it as could the piston.
Not read the whole thread, have you changed the piston and seal?

Sorry, I should have said - I did the both front callipers: complete disassembly and clean, new: pistons, seals, piston dust covers, new carrier pin rubber covers, and pins inspected/lubricated, new bleed nipples.
