Default rattle at 2500 rpm

Hi

My 1.8 has a metalic rattle at precisely 2500 rpm and can be heard when accelerating or decelerating. It sounds like it could be an exhaust part or something similar but there are no obvious signs of any loose bits that could cause it.

Anyone had anything similar?

I have changed the bottom engine mount rubber to the powerflex type.

At a first guess I would say heat shield, cat breaking up (there are two - one in the manifold & one under floor) exhaust baffle.

I would also have a close listen to the front of the engine. Could possibly be around the timing belt area.

Interesting - I thought it could be exhaust related but how did you find it was the CAT or did you just decide to change it anyway?
