Default Samsung A3 mobile factory reset question.

I have an 'old' (about 4 years) Samsung A3 mobile phone which has given good service. However, recently it's been regularly warning me that about 15Gb of it's 16Gb memory have been used up and it's now running short of space.

I only had a few basic apps added to what was there originally (ebay, Gumtree, 2 banks, 2x email accts, Dorset Explorer, and a couple of well known eateries - at most I'd guess these may have added up to 1Gb), photos & videos were automatically saved to an SD card.

So with the storage issue in mind, I decided to do a factory reset, before considering the possibility of buying something new, as it works well and still does what I need.

My question is that since doing the reset, the memory used has dropped to less than half, about 6.7Gb, so what was the other 8.3Gb (15 - 6.7Gb) being used for ???

I did look into the phone's storage settings but it didn't give any specifics, just an overall amount used

It will almost certainly be Cached data for the apps you are using. Apps will store data locally rather than having to download it each time you use them to save time generally. Just checked mine and they are using nearly a gig (i do clear some apps often like facebook for instance as it can store loads of pics etc) but as i have 40 odd gigs free i'm not too worried about it and as i use them for work demonstrating equipment performance is a preference.

I had an a3, and planned to keep it once my contract expired. Literally 4 days before the contract ended, the screen went black. Aargh. I would have loved to have kept it over this a6 I have now, as it was adequate for my needs and comfortable to use.

Anyway, the excess storage being used will be (at least some of it) for the caches from webpages, thumbnails etc, as well as this, it will be ram partially used to preload apps or apps that run in the background.

Youcan clear this out every so often using the settings, -> storage and it should be obvious what to do next (I cannot recall lol).

Also if you press the lower left button on the phone, it will show apps that are still running in the background. Press close all, and this will help speed up the phone. Switching it off and on every so often too will help to speed things up in a crude way (like a computer reboot)

Thank you for the replies. I reset the phone just under a week ago and it's already jumped up from 6.7 to 10.6Gb ???

I've also been into the settings and cleared the various things it suggested I clear, but no difference.

Is it just a conspiracy to force us all to buy new phones...??
