If the coolant was at the max mark with a hot engine I'd say Its short of said coolant.
Sounds like a leak to me.

OK, so I had it looked at today and sure enough the thermostat housing (only three years old) is leaking. To cap it all the low speed fan is dead too.
What do I need to order to get these two jobs fixed for good? I'm thinking (i) Jules' Revotec fan (or is that overkill, should I just get the gold resistor? It's a 2002 model.) (ii) Kaiser metal thermostat housing and thermostat. As the car is booked in for work in a week's time, are the any UK suppliers of the metal thermostat housing? I don't expect it will get here in time if it has to come from South Africa :-( |

To complete the story I took it into Terry's today and had a new radiator fitted plus new thermostat (plastic as I couldn't source a metal one in time). Turned out quite a few other jobs needed doing too before the next MOT including suspension bushes, new aircon radiator due to leak and a new starter motor. Oh, and a full service with spark plug change.
What with all that plus four new tyres a couple of weeks ago I've spent more repairing the car this month than it cost me to buy - but it has been worth every penny, it rides even better now than ever before during my nearly four years of ownership. The only niggle I had with the spark plugs was that at first I thought the car was stalling each time I came to traffic lights because I couldn't hear the engine ticking over at all. Similar to a BMW I rode in recently that does stop the engine on applying the brakes. Of course the Rover wasn't really stopping, it's just I hadn't appreciated how much more smoothly it could run with new spark plugs. Do it! |
