If you want to kmow whats in your computer, only tells you how much memory, Crucial is better with scan, or if all your MS updates are installed ok get, http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html, it's free.

was mentioned previously that things such as upgrading motherboard etc would make XP think it was a new box and then I think you have to ring up microsoft to inform them, to enable you to continue to upgrade as and whenever ,would the same situ arise by changing / upgrading the ram?

No, Changing Memory does not alter anything as to Licence of Windows or other programs just makes them run faster.

unless of course you have an old athlon in your workshop that actually runs slower with 1 gig of ram than with 512

You are quite right Some of the older Processors have this effect more often than not P3s early P4's and Early Athlon's, there is a real reason for this but that does not help you if you have one. The Licence info was fully correct though, get to use to latest technology to much Im afraid.

I don't really mind the workshop athlon only having 512Mb though, as that's plenty for what it does anyway (at the moment a glorified radio/mp3/DVD player) I used to use it for downloading drivers for machines i was working on, until I remembered that all i had to do was plug the wireless adaptor into the machine I was actually working on, and download straight to it....... one of those DOH! moments
