Default Starting problem - starter motor sticking?

Hi,

Can’t seem to figure this out, a few times in the last few months I’ve got in and turned the key but no starter motor action, all the electrics work and I had a new battery 6 months ago. Eventually after a few minutes it started as soon as it started cranking. No clicking and no dimming of the dash lights.

Today turned the key and nothing happened, no starter motor and all electrical systems seem to be working. I was on a hill so bump started it and it started straight away.

Got to work and same thing, key turn and nothing, I’m thinking maybe a sticking starter motor or dodgy solenoid contacts but I’m hoping someone else has had a similar problem. After about 20 goes it started straight away but we are due to go to Devon next weekend and I want to get to the bottom of it.

Diesel 2002 manual.

Many thanks

Jon

Clean/wire brush the large and small leads to the starter as they get corrosion on the mating surfaces.

Thanks, will try those and have also ordered the starter motor rebuild kit to see if that helps.

I had the exact same issue as yours. Over time it got worse. The starter repair kit fixed the issue once and for all.

I have a repair kit for the starter motor but I was wondering how long it would take to remove and service it? I need the car at the weekend and was wondering if it would be quicker to buy a replacement unit and just swap them? seen Lucas ones on eurocar parts for about £155?
