Default Got a fright today

I left the house this afternoon to run a couple of errands in my 75 diesel. At the lights, I Put my foot on the brake pedal but the pedal was solid and the car didn’t want to stop. I stomped on it a few times and the car gradually slowed down narrowly avoiding hitting the car in front of me. I haven’t experienced this before and got a fright. I pulled up safely at the next opportunity and encountered the same problem as I was pulling over using the brakes.

I got out of the car to investigate. Brakes and calipers looked fine and I couldn’t see any brake fluid leaking from anywhere. I safely stopped off to a nearby garage but they didn’t have time to investigate as they were about to close for the day. I described the problem to one of the mechanics and he said it sounds like there is no servo.

I was concerned by this issue and wanted it addressed ASAP as I could be driving a death trap. I called my friend Colin who kindly offered to look at it for me. I safely drove the 20 miles or so up to his via the M9. He couldn’t find the fault to begin with.

Luckily, I had Marina Brian’s phone no and decided to call him. As I was describing the problem I was having, Brian stopped me mid sentence and knew exactly what I was going to say and what the fault was. He told me to check the vacuum hose above the starter under the engine cover. I think it goes from my EGR bypass and connects into something else. Can’t remember the terms Brian used. Brian suspected the vacuum pipe has a hole in it or has popped off drawing in air. After putting the phone down, we found that the vacuum hose had actually come off and a small part of the hose had chaffed so Colin cut this bit off and reconnected it back up. I drove it home and everything seems normal again.

According to Brian, this is quite a common issue so I suggest everyone check your vacuum hose to make sure it’s not chaffed or popped off as it could cost you dearly.

So, big thanks to Brian for his expert advise. He was spot on and potentially saved my life. The man is a genius.
And, thanks to Colin for helping me fix the issue. Only a 2 minute job in the end.

Close call and scary too, Brian's encyclopedic knowledge of these cars saves the day once more.

I had a similar issue with a friend's Fabia.
Halfords looked over it first and needlessly changed the discs and pads, then I actually mended it!

It does always pay to look over vacuum pipes

I've had this happen to me on a Ford Galaxy, and its not fun, it certainly gives you a scare, as you say Rav.

The problem I had was... One day I had to jump-start the Galaxy by pushing, the bumping of the vehicle jolted the engine so much it pulled-out the vacuum pipe, it took me hours to find out why I had no brakes.

I think it is probably only a diesel problem, as they need a vacuum pump to generate vacuum, whereas petrol engines don't - they get it from the inlet manifold - I think.

I remember a scary moment nearly going through the garage door driving a Mk 3 Cortina. A vacuum hose, with minuscule cracks in the rubber was to blame. A section of heater hose cured the problem. Those were the days !!
