driving with fog lamps on
Good morning
Is it just me being over sensitive but ive noticed this year people seem to be obsessed with driving around with their fog lamps on at night when there's no fog. . Fog lamps are really useful when its foggy or when visabilty is bad but people nowadays are driving around with them on all the while, trying there best to burn the back of my retinas out. You flash them to turn the dam things off and the response you get is full beam pointing back to you. Is it a fashion thing amongst youngsters or just ignorance against the uniformed. Best Regards from Victor Meldrew

It's one of my biggest hates too especially in the rain where the rear fogs are easy to mistake for brake lights!
In fact a few weeks back I followed an old escort with it's rear fog light on thinking to myself 'it was foggy yesterday he must have forgotten to turn it off'.. A week later behind the same car again in traffic and yes his foglight was still on. |

Hi.
Yes you are right, I wonder if its due to so many cars now with DRL's that they think its ok to do it or just a very fast lowering of driving standards that is so noticable these days?

With our cars for instance, the IPK illuminates both fog lamp icons. They are are in your face in the dark, makes you want to turn them off if not needed. |

I can't say that I've ever been blinded by them - maybe some aren't lined up correctly? To my eye they appear no brighter than headlights. Badly aligned headlights are to me a bigger nuisance.
However, most of the roads around me are unlit, and as such even worse still are the idiots who think that because they are 200yds behind that their main beam won't still be blinding! Honestly this happens every single night

Fog lights have a low and wide beam pattern, they shouldn't be blinding anyone.
Although, I agree, turn them off unless it is actually foggy. |

Some of the Fog lights on our cars have H1 bulbs and they are in a deflector tube in the lamp housing. These lamps are not bright at all, rather disappointing when they are actually needed.
The better version is the H11 versions without the deflector tube in the lens, much brighter. I had this version on my previous car. I set the beam pattern nice and low in front of the car and they were perfect. |

They are called 'fog' lights after all, so that is their function.
I dislike the use of fog lights when it isn't foggy (and those who forget to turn them off) However, rightly or wrongly I did use them the other night to illuminate the side of the road to look out for deep puddles during a period of torrential rain. Xenons are excellent, but fog lights illuminate a lower wider pattern. I was more concerned about preventing my car from being flooded! |
