Used IPA on mine. Cleaned pretty well. Thinners seemed to do a slightly better job, maybe after IPA had been used first?

As far as I'm aware exhaust gases are introduced to improve emission and not primarily to cool the cylinder. Hot exhaust gases are going to modify the burn which could lead to lower combustion temperatures, but given that the EGR valve only opens at part throttle I cannot see removing it will affect the longevity of various components when they are designed to take the full force, temperature, pressure etc, when the engine is under full load and at high RPM.

Agreed, the technical CD merely states that the exhaust gas recirculation is
provided to improve emissions, no mention of cooling anything.

The idea is to use an inert gas to lower the amount of oxygen in the charge of air entering the cylinders. As the exhaust can provide it for free this is what they use.

It lowers the combustion temperatures and so reduces the amount of NOx produced.

Bit like an oxyacetylene torch: Light it on just the acetylene and it burns pretty cool. Start adding oxygen and the flame temperature increases.
