Default Weird knock. Is it an engine mount? Which one?

Hi,
My new old 75 2.5 auto is making a weird noise, like a knock, at various times. Is not linked to going over bumps specifically, although sometimes it makes the noise in those cases also. Light movement left and right, you can hear it; under hard acceleration is not there.
I can feel the knocks in the floor and pedal acceleration somehow.
On the other hand the steering feels jerkys, so it could be the droplinks, or something totally different.

How do you guys analyse the knocks in Rovers, and find the faulty part?

Thanks!

Sit in the car with the engine off, wobble the steering wheel from left to right and see if you can hear it knock.

Check the rubber bushes at the rear of the front wishbones. They can knock on acceleration and deceleration.

Ok, engine off, wobble wheel and there are different knocks, I think from the steering rack being forced; if I wobble it slightly at another angle than center, I think I can hear the same knock, but faintly. It’s more like the spring compressing and slipping on a metal surface.
Then, start the engine, and wobble steering. Omg, it makes that noise... I feel like you knock my knees with a hammer. And it’s even worse if you drive at low speeds and wobble steering wheel fast.
Basically the noise is exactly like strong spring moving and slipping around. But the car holds the road very well, doesn’t feel jerkish.

So it’s the top mounts? Or the rear bushings of the arm?
It’s a pain in the ass whichever might be (although it’s better than an engine mount )

Put the steering in a straight line, then try and push each wheel with your foot back ,
if any movement its the bush that is worn.

Sounds like strut bearings to me too.

After having nearly everything in the suspension replaced on my car, I was getting what sounds like the same kind of noises, a bit worrying as I had tried to use only good quality parts.

Turns out the garage that changed the front suspension for me hadn't tightened the bolts on the top mount properly.

Had it in today to another garage to check everything over and find the source of the noises before it's MOT and 15th Birthday next month and this is what they found to be the problem.

So mine was actually loose struts but it sounded a lot like when the bearings are worn out and steering felt a bit wonky too.

Aren’t the top mounts having the strut bearings already installed?
Or top mounts is not the same with top hats?
