I used AVG Free for many years, - but it started hogging lots of memory, so I swapped to Avria which seems to be fine, and doesn't consume much in the way of resources. Malwarebytes Free is a very worthwhile download too. It found, and 'killed' a malicious piece of software that was trying to grab my bank passwords.

IT professional here.
My advise for normal users is not to worry a lot about virus scanners. Windows defender (feature in windows itself) offers good protection against viruses already. But if you insist in getting an antivirus program i would advise Malwarebytes. |

A years or so ago and not being a PC expert I came across a magazine called 'Computer Active'.
It's not one of those highly priced gobbledy-gook kind of mags that are way over my head and I was so impressed by some of the information that I became a subscriber and in their latest edition they've run some side-by-side tests on av software. Cut a long story short they advise to stay away from Windows Defender due to it's many deficiencies, the best FREE av is AVAST and the best paid for is Kaspersky, Malware Bytes is a 'must have' and if you have an 'older' PC then the best av for you is Norton as it has less system-impact. I suppose like a lot of things it depends on your preferences and if something is working, and has in the past, then don't fix it. Must admit though I stopped using Windows Defender some time ago but then I rolled back to Windows 7 so what do I know!!!!!!
