1.8t replacement backbox (GT branded)

my replacement backbox arrived today going to attempt fitment this evening can't be too tricky

i ordered a cheap backbox - GT branded it doesn't seem too bad quality. i don't expect it to be on par with the original, or that it will last 12 years. i decided i'd like a full stainless system (cat-back) but i need to get my mot pass - this backbox was £54 delivered - worth a try

I've got the same on my 1.8t and it sounds great , not too boomy. Easy enough to fit, just cut the other one off with an angle grinder.

i expected this replacement backbox to have a flared(?) end - to fit over, and clamp onto the original centre section guess that's what happens when you buy cheap - looks like that part of the production process was missed.

anywho - i managed to remove the old backbox using a hacksaw.
it was rather tatty to say the least.

the new unit fits well on the hangers, tailpipes line up well and it looks Good - i managed to bend the join ends out slightly to fit about 10mm over the centre section, and a cable tie supporting the weight at the "join" - i'm not driving the car as it has no mot for now - i've ordered a straight coupler with 63mm internal diameter which "should" slide over both pipes and clamp them tight

Online shopping can be such a joy.....stress free....order parts, they arrive promptly............they sent a 67mm clamp rather than a 63mm

lol..... an angry message to the seller, told him i'm not prepared to pay postage to return this part and i expect a replacement correct size as ordered to be sent asap

i used this clamp to join the two exhaust parts for now - it sounds a lot better even with the slight blow from this oversized clamp (i'm still not driving the car, had to see how it sounded tho )

we'll get there

I wonder if this is the same GT exhaust company in northern Ireland. they used to have a great name locally, I remember them having quite a tiny exhaust fitting service many moons ago.

you could be right i expected this to be a part from china - no evidence of this anywhere with the order - there are usually signs
and the quality on first impression seems better than i had expected time will tell on that one
i had a wee search after you mentioned this - GT exhausts Belfast, and they do systems for the 75 1.8t - backbox being around what i paid too £52.21 - i paid £54 delivered.

i only started my car with this box "temp fitted" with the wrong size coupler - it sounded nice, seemed relatively quiet and not "cheap sounding"

turns out it was my mistake i ordered the wrong size coupler.
ordered the correct size (60mm internal) and it arrived today
took a wee bit of effort to get it all connected and sitting properly - probably an idea to get some fire gum to do this, as it would act like a grease when fitting and give a definite seal once it's been exposed to the heat of the exhaust - anywho, it looks Good, sounds pretty quiet to me and best of all - i passed my M.O.T re-test

How'do folks

I had a wee run tonight with the new backbox fitted i was concerned about a replacement part being noisy - this one seems to be as quiet as i'd want it to be. i couldn't really hear it in the car when cruising and under hard throttle through the rev range, i think the engine was louder

I honestly expected a bit of drone from such an inexpensive replacement part.
so on first impressions i'd say this GT backbox is excellent value
