Well finally it's been sorted with a new thermostat from DMGRS. Annoying as the failed one is only 5 years old. Oh well.

They're hanging on to it to get the wishbone and make up the brake pipes for the MOT. Bah.

Just to conclude, in addition to the above they found a failed engine mount (the rubber had completely come apart) which has cured a thump when engaging drive... and it's MOTd now.
