Default Under Bonnet Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is making a noise.
When I turn the ignition on it runs for a bit then stops as it should.
The point is that when I'm in the car and I turn the ignition on I can hear the pump from within the car.
Is this normal or is the pump on it's way out?
Also when driving 25 miles to work the engine seems to cough now and again.
Could this be signs of the pump or something else?

Seeing as we are coming into pantomime season 'Oh no they can't!'.
Yours was noisy but still providing enough pressure.

Could the coughing be a sign of the pump going? Or will the pump just stop altogether?

Is it a Pierberg (original) pump or a cheap aftermarket one?
If it is dying, at some point it will fail and the car won't start, if/when that happens give the pump a sharp tap and it will start working again. Replace a.s.a.p after that, don't be tempted by the cheap versions, they are noisy from the start, provide lower pressure than the Pierberg and don't last long. Also check your intank pump is working.
