Default Wobbly gear lever on 260

I've just noticed that gearchanges on the 260 are deteriorating. This happened before and the local Vospers main dealer diagnosed a failed gear linkage. Their repair only lasted a few months and it failed again. They attacked the issue a second time and said the heavy duty components they fitted should never fail again. That was about five years ago. I read somewhere that to fix the linkage properly it needed the engine/gearbox to come out and that if this wasn't done, there was a chance of damaging the drive shaft. Vospers told me they did it both times without taking out the engine.
I know that if I keep driving her, the linkage will get so wibbly wobbly I'll be going into fourth when I want second. Any advice from those who've been there before would be most welcome.
