Not as bad as you'd think my V8, Dave T's old one, does around 23mpg local and in excess of 25mpg on a run. Previously with my V6 manual used to get circa 27mpg and 34mpg.

They made an auto 180. The 190 only came in manual flavour

no it didn't - I know someone who has a 190SE Auto from new, thats what he ordered and thats what he's got! Probably very rare and a special order (like my TF was when new) but there is at least one out there!!!!!

MG Rover only ever made a 180 auto ZT/ZT-T so your contact is wrong i'm afraid. Special orders were not available on autos

Where on the car does it say its a 190?

Does it say 190 Auto on the log book? If not he's been had i'm afraid. MG Rover did not create one off engine models due to the cost and testing requirements e.g. CO2 emissions, torque, insurance ratings etc

I think the only other way to find out what the gentleman owns is by looking at the eleven-digit VIN prefix starting as SARRJ... This will give an indication of its build specification engine size and power output and transmission - I am guessing that there is a different engine code for the '180' 2.5-litre KV6 (as fitted in the ZT 180 Sports Auto) compared to that for the '190' version?

Building a 'special' one-off automatic transmission mated up to 190Ps spec appears unlikely due to potential homologation issues.

For example, a number of customers enquired about the availability of automatic transmission on the Land Rover Defender Td5, although Land Rover did not build any because they had not developed such a version, let alone homologated it. However, specialist external engineering companies would build one for you...

Again, with the last of the Series 2 Discoverys, there was never a 4.6-litre V8 version for the UK market, because it had not been homologated for this market. This was despite the fact that such a version was sold in North America from 2002 - 2004, and the same engine was of course used in the second generation Range Rover.

However, it would have been possible to have specified a manual gearbox (from the MG ZT) on the Rover 75 V8 - this was mentioned to me by a senior manager at MG Rover Group in early 2005. However, this was never promoted (because of the MG ZT260) and customers never enquired about such a possibility in the very short period the 75 V8 was built.

Hope this helps.
