Default looking at buying a 2.0 v6 auto

What kind of things do I look for when purchasing a 2.0 v6 auto? What specs would a cowley connie be with personal line interior?

Snails and tortoises waving at you as they sail past 🤣

If you don’t need to go anywhere quickly, they are a nice smooth drive, personally the lack of get up and go puts me off a bit.

I’d be looking for petrol stations ! My first 75 back in 2001 (BU51ZZM) that I owned for two years before trading her for my tourer that I still own, only returned 239 miles to the tank in every day use but could manage 400 on a careful run. Lovely creamy smooth engine and a nice sound though however you’d have to give her a prod to get moving due to the poor torque so that would probably explain her thirst for only a 2 litre.

Loosing along and giving the beans to get somewhere isn’t an issue for my as I have a 1.0 Austin metro 😂

The 2 litre V6 is soooo smoooth, but fuel consumption worse than the 2.5, and takes an awful lot of winding up. I wouldn't bother, it will be much slower than your Metro!

Water leaks, vis function and fan operation! Make sure it runs and sounds nice otherwise they are fairly reliable units.

As above with regards to getting one though, either get a 2.5 or don't bother if your dead set on a v6. Otherwise the 1.8t is a good compromise and quicker in many scenarios and much easier to look after. Not a lot in it economy wise either.

Oh.. and watch out for the cam snapping, some 2.0V6s have been known to do this.

It all just seems a bit....... well........ pointless. Can't really see why anyone would produce or for that matter would want to buy one, I mean it's the worst of everything. Complexity, size, fuel consumption, and six of things rather than four. Do you get payback in power and torque? Ummmm nope.

So am I missing something???

As has been said there are three things specific to the V6:
  • Coolant leaks in the 'V'. Take a powerful torch with you to check.
  • The VIS actuators and flap valves are prone to faults which cause listless performance on the 2.5 let alone the 2.0. They're easily repaired except for a rattling 'power' linkage which should be avoided.
  • After starting from cold, listen for a mild rattle from the belt area which ceases after a minute or two. This is a sign of a worn tensioner and/or idler wheel and will dictate when you need to renew them and the cambelts. Check the service history carefully. It doesn't need doing every six years unless you're of a nervous disposition!

Electric radiator fan operation should be checked using the 'demist test', but this isn't peculiar to the 2.0 V6.

A camshaft won't snap if repairs are carried out by a competent, careful person.

As far as fuel consumption is concerned, and as I'm sure you appreciate, your 1.0 litre Metro is the best choice for pootling around town. For constant speed cruising on motorways or uncongested 'A' roads when the torque converter is locked, I get an average of 30 - 33 mpg (measured by the brim-to-brim method) from my 2.5 litre V6. I would expect similar from the 2.0 litre under those conditions.

The 2.0 KV6 is a rare and interesting variant and it can be rewarding owning something a little bit different. You don't have to keep it for ever and it will certainly be a contrast to your diesel tourer and on that basis, an experience worth having. Good luck!

Simon
