The gearbox will not affect the performance of the car at all, provided it does not slip or send a restricted performance command.
The shift quality can be affected but if there was a specific problem with the gearbox it would be quite noticeable and not disappear in SPORT () mode.

This is not what I think we have here, - at all.
This is lack of oomph, simple and easy.

My (re-mapped 160) diesel is quicker and much more responsive than my 2.5V6. That's how it is.

It need not be though Dave. If you'd care to give your 2.5 V6 the VIS and cam cover breather medication, you will reap the reward.

A convertor can chew up energy if in poor condition. Just because it has low mileage if that has mainly been done in traffic that can ware a convertor. Some cars suffer with this more than others, ask BMW 5 series owners.

The first thing I would check is the colour of the gearbox oil and how it smells. Any contamination or smells and you need to factor this is. Just replacing the fluid wont fix it, it might put off a rebuild but only by a few months or miles.

That's great information from all of you - thanks. We're going to view the car again at the weekend so I hope my friend bites the bullet and buys it. It will be good to apply your advice and bring the performance back up to where it should be.

I can vouch for this. My recently-acquired 2.5 ZT was somewhat reluctant from start up to c3000rpm. Turned out the balance VIS motor was not working, plus its flap wasn't closing correctly as apparently is their want.

Dave Stocks (stocktake) charged £50 for a rebuild including postage. I was without it for only four days. Taking them out is honestly a breeze - just unclip the connector(s) and then Philips screws, all accessible. The difference is really noticeable - I now have balanced power from zero to infinity! It's smooth and muscular (unlike me ).

The only issue you might have is determining which if either of the two motors is faulty.

Dougie.

Well, BigRuss ran his beady and knowledgeable eye over it and said that's it - I accept his expert verdict.

It needs its head kicking in a bit!

Vis motors may well be to blame and they can cause problems with the v6’s lacklustre performance but the kv6 isn’t worth bothering with unless the rev needle is past the number 4!

The gearboxes are pants though, especially if your not used to them. They will thank you for an oil change but the design is nearly 30 year old. Smooth, absolutely. Good at transmitting power quickly, not really...

Sounds perfect for my (old man) style of driving!
